In NZ all marine mammals are protected by law however this is not the case in all parts of the world. Indiscriminate killing of dolphins and whales still continues to this day and although world focus and pressure from some environmental groups has helped reduce these killings, some countries continue to disregard world opinion and support the taking of whales and dolphins.
