How long do the tours last?
Dolphin Encounter tours last approximately 4 hours from check in time to your return to our booking office. The time on the boat at sea is approximately 2.5 hours depending on the location of the dolphins.
We work in nature with wild animals, and tour duration is subject to wildlife location and sea conditions on the day. Please allow enough time for your experience, especially if you have onward travel plans with public transport. Tour duration can vary by up to an hour, so we cannot guarantee your return time.
Which tour time is best to see the dolphins?
We enjoy a high success rate across all of our departures. If we had to pick, we would generally recommend the morning departures as sea conditions can typically be calmer earlier in the day, and the dolphins can be more active at this time. The number of dolphins does not usually vary from tour time to tour time.
Do I need swimming experience?
The Kaikōura coastline is an expansive area of deep water open to the Pacific Ocean.
Our tour is an adventure experience; swimming off shore in open water waves and swell is very challenging, and a good level of stamina and physical fitness is required. Swimmers will need a good level of upper body strength to reboard the vessel from the water without assistance. Previous snorkelling experience is also advantageous.
Being an experienced swimmer is helpful but not essential, as long as you are confident in the water. We do have flotation devices like kickboards and buoyancy aids if a little extra assistance is needed. Please note that our crew do not enter the water on our tours.
Passengers must acknowledge that as with any outdoor or ocean-based activity there are inherent risks and thereby take full responsibility for their health and actions, releasing Encounter Kaikoura from any claim, action and/or liability.
Are reservations essential?
Yes definitely, our tours sell out quickly especially in the summer!
What if my preferred tour time is sold out?
Our Department of Conservation operating permits limit us to 16 swimmers on each boat per tour, and our popular watching option also books up fast.
